Dermatol Sinica 8: 61-70, 1990

This paper reports 50 cases ofdermatomyositis who were admitted to the Veterans General Hospital-Taipei, during the period from 1973 to 1989. Thirty cases were male and twenty were female; the distribution of age was from 7 to 76 years old (mean age: 39.7 years). Ten cases, all over 40 years old, were associated with malignant tumor (20%); the rate of malignancy among all patients of dermatomyositis over 40 years old was 40% (10/25). The most common malignancy in our study was nasopharyngeal ..................More

Chien-Yung Huang, Min-Hung Huang, Whei-Min Len, Kuo-Chang Chou, Kai-Yam Ng, Ming-Che Huang
Dermatol Sinica 8: 71-77, 1990

We report a case of blue rubber-bleb nevus syndrome. A 21-year-old female suffered from intermittent tarry stool passage since tenage. Multiple bluish subcutaneous nodules over trunk and extremities were also noted. She was admitted to medical ward due to chronic iron-deficiency anemia. Panendoscopy revealed a polypoid hemangioma in the duodenum. Small bowel series revealed some polypoid masses in the jejunum. Histopathology of skin lesion on right arm showed cavernous hemangioma.   Mercury Exanthem
Chung-Hsing Chang, Hsin-Yu, Tsu-Chieh Shen
Dermatol Sinica 8: 79-86, 1990

We experienced 2 cases of mercury exanthem, appearing on the second and the third day after breaking a clinical thermometer. The skin manifestations were diffuse erythematous or purpuric papules, predominantly on the major flexural areas. The V-shaped erythema over the upper anterio-medial thighs was an out-standing feature. Skin pathology showed edema of dermis, perivascular monocyte, neutrophil and eosinophil infiltration in both cases. But swelling of endothelial cell, erythrocyte extravas ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 8: 87-94, 1990

The hypereosinophilic syndrome is a disorder characterized by persistent idiopathic eosinophilia associated with dysfunction of various organs. We herein report a case of hypereosinophilic syndrome. A 56-year-old male patient with recent CVA attack was noticed to have persistent eosinophilia and several reddish grain-sized papules on his right-sided upper back. Chest x-ray disclosed cardiomegaly and lung congestion. Echocardiogram showed a density of fibrin occupying left ventrical apical ar ..................More
  Multicentric reticulohistiocytosis
Ren-Chun Liao, Hsin-Yi Su, Hsiu-Chin Chen, Hsu-Po Yeh, Chun-Hsiang Chang
Dermatol Sinica 8: 95-101, 1990

A 36-year-old woman had suffered from multiple joints pain for 6 months and developed reddish papulonodular eruptions over the dorsal aspects of both hands in recent 4 months. The histopathological examination of the skin lesions showed an infiltration in dermis of histiocytes and multinucleated giant cells with "ground-glass" cytoplasm that was PAS positive and diastase-resistant. Electron microscopic examination revealed within these cells numerous electron-dense lysosomes. Under the diagno ..................More
  Mal de Meleda
Szu-Chen Liu, Shiou-Hwa Jee, Hsiu-Chin Chen
Dermatol Sinica 8: 103-109, 1990

A male patient with glove-and sock-like erythrokeratoderma, perioral erythema, and autosomal recessive inheritance, was diagnosed as Mal de Meleda. The patient received etretinate for three years, and the initial dose was 0.5 mg/kg per day for 10 months and then it was increased to 0.75 mg/kg per day. The following article discusses how this patient responded to the etretinate treatment, and reviews recent literature pertinent to retinoid treatment of keratosis palmaris et plantaris. ..................More
  Chilblain Lupus Erythematosus
Shih-Yueh Chen, Horng-Tsann Chiou, Chun-Jae Yeh
Dermatol Sinica 8: 111-116, 1990

We report a case of chilblain lupus erythematosus in a 66-year-old woman. Pernio-like lesions of fingers, accompanied with non-scarring annular or figurate maculopapules on cheeks, neck and V-chest, recurred in winter for more than 10 years. Histologically, both lesions of neck and finger showed liquefaction of epidermal basal layer, dermal edema, and lymphocytic infiltration in upper dermis. Neither follicular plugging nor periappendageal lymphocytic infiltration was found. Direct immunofluo ..................More

Mei-Eng Tu, Huey-Jen Su, Hsiu-Chin Chen
Dermatol Sinica 8: 117-127, 1990

Lichen myxedematosus is an uncommon slowly progressive cutaneous mucinosis. It is characterized by mucin deposition in the dermis without any internal organ involvement. There is no thyroid dysfunction. In many cases, the peculiar serum r-globulin and slight marrow plasmacytosis were found . The etiologic factors are unknown. Many treatment modalities have been used in the past for lichen myxedematosus. None, however, have shown consistently favorable result. This report concerns a case who ..................More
