Yu-Hung Wu, Yuan-Hsin Lo, Hsin-Yi Su
Dermatol Sinica 16: 1-8, 1998

We examined the cutaneous disorders of school children in Orchid Island in March 1997. Total 544 students including 49 children in one kindergarten; 301 children in five primary schools; 159 students in one junior high schools and 35 students in one senior high school were examined by naked eye observation and Wood's light. The most important infectious skin disorders were pediculosis capitis(37.5%, from 2.9% to 76.3%) and scabies(13.2%, from 2.9% to 25.6%); the others were verruca vulgaris(11.9 ..................More

Preliminary Study of the Anti-Microbial Effect of Psoralea on Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis
Quey-Ching Sheu
Dermatol Sinica 16: 9-14, 1998

The effect of Psoralea on controlling colonization of Staphylococcus aureus and epidermidis was in-vestigated in vitro. Two Staphylococcus aureus and one Staphylococcus epidermidis samples were exam-ined in complex solutions containing bacteria and Psoralea of various concentrations. The results show drastic reduction of the bacteria colonization rate. Detailed mechanisms of colonization rate reduction is not yet understood. It, however, may provide an alternative for treating atopic dermatitis ..................More

The condition cleared after treatment with topical isoconazole cream. ..................More

  Hair Follicle Nevus
Shu-Hui Wang, Ren-Yeu Tsai, Heng-Leong Chan, Tseng-Tong Kuo
Dermatol Sinica 16: 19-21, 1998

Hair follicle nevus is an extremely rare hamartoma composed of many small well-differentiated hair follicles, occasionally accompanied by a few small sebaceous glands. We report a case of hair follicle nevus, which was observed in a 37-year-old female. The lesion was a soft, flesh-colored, asymptomatic papule measuring 5mm in diameter on her left cheek for 5 years. Histopathological examination reveals many well-differentiated vellous hair follicles in a fibrous stroma. ..................More

Adult Colloid Milium—A Case Report and Differential Diagnosis with Cutaneous Amyloidosis
Chien-Chun, Chung-Hsing Chang, Hsin-Su Yu
Dermatol Sinica 16: 22-27, 1998

A 59-year-old male farmer had suffered from multiple asymptomatic small papules about 1-2 mm in diameter, yellowish brown and semi-translucent, over both dorsal hands for 10 years. Histologically, round, fissured, eosinophilic, homogenous masses occupy the upper-most dermis. Electron microscopically, these colloid material consisted primarily of a granulo-fibrillar, amorphous substance. On high magnification, very fine filaments, only 2 nm wide, are seen embedded in the amorphous substance, and ..................More

Sebaceous Carcinoma and Basal Cell Carcinoma Arising in Nevus Sebaceus—Report of a Case Treated with Mohs' Micrographic Surgery
Ya-Huey Chuang, Ren-Yeu Tsai, Chen-Nei Wang, Heng-Leong Chan, Tseng-Tong Kuo
Dermatol Sinica 16: 28-34, 1998

We report a case of sebaceous carcinoma and multiple basal cell carcinomas arising in a nevus sebaceus. A 42-year-old male patient presented with a red-brown verrucoid plaque on his right occipital scalp since childhood. It enlarged slowly until 2 years ago when it began to grow rapidly with the appearance of a pink smooth nodule. The excisional biopsy specimen of the nodular lesion showed a nevus sebaceus with sebaceous carcinoma and multiple basal cell carcinomas. He was treated by Mohs' micro ..................More

  Bullous Morphea
Chung-Yuan Wang, Han-Nan Liu, The-Lu Chu
Dermatol Sinica 16: 35-39, 1998

A 14-year old young girl, suffered from morphea with a subsequent bullous formation over her right thigh, mid-back and right flank. Bullous morphea is a rare complication of morphea. The pathogenesis is unknown. The cause of bullae formation is controversial. Lymphatic obstruction caused by the scleromatous process may be a factor. Trauma and eosinophils, particularly major basic protein deposition, may constitute to tissue destruction and bullae formation in some patients. We also investigate ..................More

  Malignant Acanthosis Nigricans
Hsin-Chao Lu, Ming-Tsan Wang, Chng-Hsing Chang, Hsin-Su Yu
Dermatol Sinica 16: 40-44, 1998

A 72-year-old male patient previously in good health presented with the sudden appearance of numerous seborrheic keratoses on the face, neck, chest and back, and multiple itchy, warty lesions on extremities. Velvety skin with hyperpigmentation on the nape, axillae and groins were also noted. Endoscopy showed a Bormann typeⅢgastric carcinoma on posterior wall extending from the mid body to the high body. Subtotal gastrectomy was performed and the skin lesions were improved spontaneously one m ..................More

  Congenital Smooth Muscle Hamartoma
Li-Lin Huang, Jia-Sheng Bair, Tsong-Liang Lee
Dermatol Sinica 16: 45-49, 1998

Congenital smooth muscle hamartoma is a rare, benign tumor which results from excess production of smooth muscle bundles in the dermis during the fetal development. This is a case of 3- year- old boy with a 8.0 cm×3.0 cm in size, indurated, hairy plaque present on the right thigh since birth. The cutaneous lesion became firm after stroking ( positive pseudo- Darier's sign ). The histopathological examination of the skin lesion showed proliferation of smooth muscle bundles scattered throughout t ..................More

The slowly growing and painless appearance of this subcutaneous tumor, large amounts of sialomucin content in histological findings, and no other extracutaneous origin are ..................More

  Isolated Epidermolytic Acanthoma
His-Lun Su, Ming-Tzen Liu, Chang-Lin Chen
Dermatol Sinica 16: 55-59, 1998

A 76-year-old man developed a solitary asymptomatic brownish bean-sized verrucoid plaque over scrotum for 5 years. Although clinically the lesion resembled verruca vulgaris, histologic examination demonstrated change of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis. The patient had neither a personal nor a family history of ichthyosiform disorders. The diagnosis of isolated epidermolytic acanthoma was made in the review of the clinical feature, histologic features , and the history. ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 16: 60-63, 1998

We herein report a case of fibroma of tendon sheath, an uncommon disease reported in Taiwan. A 83-year-old male had a slowly-enlarged and well-defined movable firm subcutaneous mass measuring about 1.5 cm in diameter on the dorsal aspect of the third toe of left foot for one year. This tumor caused neither discomfort nor limitation of motion.
