Chii-Shyan Wang, Mei-Ping Tseng, Chee-Ching Sun
Dermatol Sinica 19: 184-189, 2001

Para-phenylenediamine (PPD), a primary intermediate in hair dye, is a potent contact allergen and a common cause of allergic contact dermatitis in hairdressers. We report the results of patch testing with PPD in National Taiwan University Hospital in the past 22 years. 115 (3.46%) of the total patch-tested 3322 patients were positive to PPD. The commonest sites of dermatitis were the face (41.5%) and the hand (28.3%). Hands of hairdressers and face of non-hairdressers were the commonest site of ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 19: 199-203, 2001

Extramammary Paget's Disease (EMPD) of the vulva is a rare disease manifested clinically by an itching, oozing, chronically persistent patch with burning sensation on the vulva, and histopathologically by randomly scattered single or clustered cells with hyperchromatic nuclei and abundant cytoplasm in the epidermis. Rarely, an underlying sweat gland carcinoma is found accompanying vulvar EMPD. We report a case of a 65-year-old woman with EMPD of the vulva and an underlying sclerosing sweat duct ..................More
Pachyonychia Congenita Type 2—A Case Report—
Fu-Sen Hsieh, J. Yu-Yun Lee, Sheau-Chiou Chao
Dermatol Sinica 19: 204-209, 2001

Pachyonychia congenita type 2 (PC-2), also known as Jackson-Lawler type PC, is a rare autosomal dominant disorder characterized by hypertrophic nail dystrophy associated with focal palmoplantar keratoderma and multiple pilosebaceous cysts. Only one case of PC-1 has been previously reported in Taiwan. In this report, we describe a typical case of PC-2, the first such case to be documented in Taiwan. The keratoderma was treated with etretinate, which was quite effective in reducing the hyperkerat ..................More

Shin-Ya Huang, Roger Chin-Che Hsu, Hsin-Su Yu, Gwo-Shing Chen
Dermatol Sinica 19: 210-216, 2001

Lichen planus pemphigoides (LPP) is a rare bullous disorder characterized by bullae on lichen planus like papules and on uninvolved skin. A diagnosis of LPP is made on the basis of clinical, histological, and immunofluorescent evaluation. We describe a 76 year-old patient who developed a vesicular and bullous eruption combined with an efflorescence of lichenoid papules especially on bilateral distal upper extremities. Skin biopsies are taken from erythematous papules and from a bulla. The histo ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 19: 217-220, 2001

Cutaneous metastatic breast carcinoma mimicking malignant melanoma, is a rare condition manifested clinically by hyperpigmented to black papules scattered on the overlying skin of the breast carcinoma or near the postmastectomy scars of breast carcinoma, and histopathologically by the dispersion of melanin-laden melanocytes at the subepidermal area amongst the breast carcinoma cells. We report a case of a 56-year-old female with breast cancer who developed multiple hyperpigmented to black papul ..................More
Successful Treatment of Linear Trichoepithelioma with Carbon Dioxide Laser —A Case Report—
Chung-Chu Ning, Hamm-Ming Sheu, Ying-Chung Chen, Sheau-Chiou Chao
Dermatol Sinica 19: 221-224, 2001

Trichoepitheliomas are benign neoplasms and can occur as either solitary or multiple lesions. Multiple lesions are inherited as an autosomal dominant trait. They usually appear at puberty and are distributed symmetrically over the central area of the face. Only two cases of multiple trichoepitheliomas presenting as a linear streak and in a dermatomal distribution have been reported. We describe a new case of multiple trichoepitheliomas with a linear distribution over the nasal bridge and left n ..................More
  Fucosidosis Type 2

Dermatol Sinica 19: 225-232, 2001

Fucosidosis is a rare lysosomal storage disease resulting from deficiency ofα-L-fucosidase. The accumulation of fucose-containing glycolipids and glycoproteins in various tissues gradually induces progressive psychomotor deterioration, growth retardation, and special skin presentation, namely, angiokeratoma corporis diffusum. Fucosidosis has autosomal recessive inheritence. Less than 100 cases were reported worldwide till now. We report a 17-year-old girl who suffered from short stature, severe ..................More

Sung-Jan Lin, Tsen-Fang Tsai, Cheng-Hsiang Hsiao
Dermatol Sinica 19: 249-254, 2001

Hydroxyurea is commonly used to treat chronic myeloproliferative disorders. Lower leg ulcer is a recently identified cutaneous adverse effect of long-term hydroxyurea therapy. We present a case of symmetrical painful lateral malleolar ulcers in a polycythemia vera patient who had been treated with hydroxyurea for 6 years. Histologically, the ulcer showed diffuse dermal fibrosis without vasculitis. The ulcer was recalcitrant despite topical treatment, but it resolved completely in one month after ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 19: 255-260, 2001

Bacille Calmette-Guerin (BCG) vaccine is administered to prevent tuberculosis and is considered to have an excellent safety profile. However, severe BCG infection can occur in individuals with defects of the host immune response. We report an eight-month-old male baby suffered from severe combined immunodeficiency with disseminated BCG infection. Skin biopsy showed numerous acid-fast bacilli and PCR analysis of skin, cerebral spinal fluid and gastric aspirate all identified Mycobacterium bovis. ..................More
