Cronkhite-Canada syndrome (CCS), first described by Cronkhite and Canada in 1955, is characterized by gastrointestinal polyposis, cutaneous hyperpigmentation, onychodystrophy and alopecia. As compared with complete form of full expression, the incomplete form may lack one or some of the clinical cutaneous manifestations. A 60-year-old Taiwanese man had chronic diarrhea and poor appetite with gradual weight loss over the past one year. Numerous discrete freckle-like macules were scattered over ..................More

We describe a 45-year-old female patient who has had an asymptomatic tumor on her left inframammary area for 1 year. Excision surgery was performed and the histopathology showed a cutaneous fibrous mass with sparse cellularity, nuclear atypia but without mitotic figures. The diagnosis of pleomorphic fibroma was confirmed. One year after the surgery there was a similar lesion developed on her ..................More
Detection of Plasma Uroporphyrin Fluorescence as An Adjuvant Diagnostic and Follow-up Tool of Porphyria Cutanea Tarda
Yuan-Yue Hou, Roger Chin-Che Hsu, Ming-Tsan Wang, Jwu-Lai Yeh, Hsin-Su Yu
Dermatol Sinica 19: 316-323, 2001

Porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) is caused by the diminution of hepatic uroporphyrinogen decarboxylase activity. The clinical manifestation of PCT is associated mainly with hepatitis C, HIV infection, elevated iron, the use of alcohol, estrogen, polychlorinated hydrocarbons and certain drugs. We report a case of 41-year- old male who has been suffering from photosensitivity, blisters over bilateral dorsal hands, hyperpigmentation over sun-exposed areas and hypertrichosis for over six months.   Darkening of Cosmetic Tattoo Induced by Iatrogenic Q-Switched Laser Therapy
Lih-Yuan Chang, Chun-Min Wang, Hong-Shang Hong
Dermatol Sinica 19: 324-330, 2001

Q-switched laser pulses can remove most tattoos effectively, with a low risk of scarring. Cosmetic tattoos, especially those with flesh-colored, red, tan or white inks, should be approached with caution when attempting removal by high-energy short-pulse laser, because of the possibility of laser-induced irreversible darkening. The possible mechanism may be caused by reaction of reduction. The darkened cosmetic tattoos can be removed by subsequent therapy in some cases, but sometimes surgical exc ..................More
