Shu-Feng Kan, Ren-Yeu Tsai, Woan-Ruoh Lee
Dermatol Sinica 21: 1-7, 2003

ABSTRAT Unwanted hair is a common cosmetic problem for both females and males. Traditional methods for hair removal are usually temporary and unsatisfactory for many individuals with excessive or unwanted hair. In recent years, several laser systems have been developed to fit the need for practical, safe and long-lasting for hair removal. From July 1999 to February 2001, a total of 125 patients with 161 anatomic sites had received long-pulsed alexandrite laser for hair removal in our hospital ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 21: 8-15, 2003

Abstract Although the clinical and pathological features of nodular fasciitis have been well recognized and documented in the English literature, there is no similar study in Taiwan. Besides, there is no study of the accuracy of preoperative diagnosis. We conducted a retrospective clinicopathologic study of 78 well-documented cases of nodular fasciitis. The male-to-female ration was 1:1.6 (30:48). The peak age of patients was the 4th decade. The mean age was 35 years. The sites of predilection ..................More
Biologic Effects of Calcipotriol and Cyclosporine on Psoriatic Skin: A Comparison Study
Cheng-Che E Lan, Tzu-Man Wu, Sen-An Yang, Hsin-Su Yu, Po-Hung Chen, Gwo-Shing Chen

Abstract Though the understanding of psoriasis has undergone a great improvement, the exact pathogenesis of this disease remains unclear. Numerous modalities have been used for treatment of psoriasis. Calcipotriol and cyclosporine are among the armamentaria. Though acting through different mechanisms, both agents can be used to treat psoriatic lesions. This study compared epidermal thickness and molecular markers of inflammation, proliferation, and differentiation, i.e. neutrophil elastas ..................More

The diagnosis of Brooke-Spiegler Syndrome is established by her typical clinical and histopathologic featu ..................More
  Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada Disease-A Case Report
Guan-Yu Chen, Shin-Chin Lin, Sheau-Chiou Chao, Ham
Dermatol Sinica 21: 33-38, 2003

Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada (VKH) disease is a panuveitis of autoimmune nature where the melanocytes act both as an inducer and as a target. The mechanism that triggers this autoimmune attack is unknown, but sensitization to melanocytic antigens by means of cutaneous injury, or viral infection have been proposed as possible factors in some cases. Integumentary signs are perhaps the most variable features of VKH disease include vitiligo, poliosis, or alopecia. We report a case of VKH disease with vit ..................More

Abstract Meralgia paresthetica (MP) is an entrapment syndrome of the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve of the thigh manifesting as pruritus, paresthesia, pain, numbness, burning, sensory loss or alopecia in the skin of the innervation of the nerve. MP is associated with various disorders; however, the etiology often remains unknown. MP is not rare and can be easily recognized based on the clinical symptoms and signs of paresthesia involving the anterolateral aspect of the thigh. We describe 5 typ ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 21: 52-57, 2003

Trichothiodystrophy is a rare hair disorder inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern. It is a disease complex which is usually associated with other neuroectodermal abnormalities and photosensitivity. The hair shows trichoschisis, trichorrhexis nodosa under light microscopy, absent or damaged hair cuticles under scanning electron microscopy, and alternating light and dark bands under polarized microscopy. The sulfur content of the hair is low. We report a patient with hair changes and develop ..................More
Facial Freckles Treated by Intense Pulsed Light- The Experience of 8 Cases in Taiwan

Dermatol Sinica 21: 58-67, 2003

Freckles or ephelides are cutaneous pigmented lesions that have familial inheritance, increase degree of pigmentation by sun-exposure, and frequently seen on face and other sun-exposure areas. Freckles (ephelides) have been reported to respond completely and quickly to the Q-switched 532nm Nd:YAG, alexandrite or ruby lasers. The skin types of Asian patients are above type III, and mostly are type IV or V. The most important consideration for laser therapy on Asian skin is post-therapy hypo-pigme ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 21: 82-90, 2003

Terbinafine is an antifungal agent used in the treatment of onychomycosis and other superficial fungal infection. Terbinafine-induced hepatitis had been described in rare patients receiving the drug. We now report a 47-year-old female who developed hepatitis during taking terbinafine for onychomycosis. Her liver function returned to normal 5 months after discontinuing the drug. We review the literature about terbinafine-induced hepatitis and discuss this rare side effect briefly. ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 21:91-96, 2003

Aggressive angiomyxoma is a rare mesenchymal neoplasm with a predilection for the pelvis and perineal regions of females. Aggressive local invasion is frequently seen in this neoplasm and hence gives the high recurrent rate after surgical excision. But there is no case of metastasis ever reported. Herein, we report a case of aggressive angiomyxoma of a 72 year-old female present as a peduncular bulky polyp with erosive surface over left vulvar area. Histopathologically, vascular channels of vari ..................More
