Dermatol Sinica 22 : 201-207, 2004

Shikonin is one of the components of Lithospermum erythrorhizon (Chinese herb medicine) used for skin infection and allergy for many generations in the Chinese population. In this study, shikonin was used to determine the inhibition of N-acetylation of 2-aminofluorene (2-AF) in human malignant melanoma cell line (A375.S2). The amounts of N-acetylation and non-N-acetylation of 2-AF were measured by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The results demonstrated that N-acetylation of AF fr ..................More
Correlation of Histopathologic Subtypes of Primary Pigmented Basal Cell Carcinoma and Number of Mohs Stages Required to Achieve a Tumor-Free Plane

Dermatol Sinica 22 : 208-212, 2004

Pigmented basal cell carcinoma is uncommon in Caucasian, but seems much more common in Asian. It is considered less aggressive than nonpigmented basal cell carcinoma, but the previous data is based on analysis of the very limited cases. We retrospectively reviewed pigmented basal cell carcinomas treated with Mohs micrographic surgery in Kaohsiung Chang-Gung Memorial Hospital from 1996 to 2002. Most histopathologic types were cleared at the first two stages of Mohs surgery, except micronodular ty ..................More
Rosacea:An Often Overlooked or Misdiagnosed Disease
Fu-Sen Hsieh , J Yu-Yun Lee , Mark Ming-Long Hsu
Dermatol Sinica 22 : 213-220, 2004

Rosacea is a common disease in fair-skinned individuals but is less common in people with darker skin. Reports about rosacea among Chinese are scarce. The purpose of this study was to document the clinical aspects of rosacea among Taiwanese. Cases of rosacea diagnosed in our Department during 1989-2002 were retrieved. The clinical diagnosis was based on the findings of central facial flushing with obvious triggering factors, non-transient erythema, papules, pustules or/and sebaceous hyperplasia. ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 22 : 221-226, 2004

Lupus erythematosus profundus (LEP) is a rare entity characterized by erythematous or flesh-colored deep nodules and plaques, with a predilection for the buttocks, arms, thighs and face. There are only 4 reported cases of linear variant of LEP in the English literature. We herein report another case of linear LEP. The patient was a 26-year-old female who presented with a linear indurated erythematous plaque along the left arm to her left palm. Skin biopsy taken from the lesion showed lymphocytic ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 22 : 227-230, 2004

We report an infant delivered at 31 weeks gestation with restrictive dermopathy, which is a rare autosomal recessive genodermatosis. The baby had thin, tightly adherent skin that causes arthrogryposis and respiratory insufficiency. Histological findings of the skin include flat dermal-epidermal junction, thinned dermis with compactly arranged collagen fibers, and hypoplastic appendage structures. ..................More

Yu-Hao Chang , Chi-Jung Chung , Tseng-tong Kuo , Hong-Shang Hong
Dermatol Sinica 22 : 231-234, 2004

A 57-year-old male was found to have papillary transitional cell carcinoma of the urinary bladder and underwent a tranurethral resection of the tumor. He suffered from multiple asymptomatic red papules on glans penis after 9th intravesical therapy with Bacillus Calmette-Guerin(BCG). His left inguinal lymph node was enlarged and tender. The skin lesions were found to be due to suppurative granulomatous inflammation. Periodic acid-Schiff stain (PAS) and acid-fast stain (AFS) were negative. The les ..................More
Discoid Lupus Erythematosus Presenting as Multiple Comedones and Acneiform-like Pitting Scars
Yu-Hao Chang , Shu-Hui Wang , Ching-Chi Chi , Tseng-tong Kuo , Hong-Shang Hong
Dermatol Sinica 22 : 235-238, 2004

A 47-year-old man presented with two plaques with large comedones and acneiform-like pitting scars on the nose for about one year. The lesions were found to be discoid lupus erythematosus upon histopathologic and direct immunofluorescence studies. An antinuclear antibody test was also positive. Because of the unusual clinical manifestation, this case is reported. ..................More
  Ichthyosis Hystrix of Curth-Macklin
Hung-Hsu Yang , Nan-Lin Wu , Yang-Chih Lin , Yu-Hung Wu
Dermatol Sinica 22 : 239-242, 2004

Ichthyosis hystrix of Curth-Macklin (IHCM) is an extremely rare keratinization disorder, with verrucous to hystrix-like hyperkeratotic plaques of varying extent. The diagnosis is based on a distinctive pattern of epidermolytic hyperkeratosis and the presence of binucleate cells under light microscopy, as well as unique electron microscopic findings of continuous perinuclear tonofibril shells in the suprabasal keratinocytes. We present the clinical manifestation and light and electron microscopic ..................More
Bullous Dermatomyositis Associated with Gastric Carcinoma-A Case Report
Tsung-Hua Tasi , Pa-Fan Hsiao , Hsin-Yi Su , Yang-Chih Lin
Dermatol Sinica 22 : 243-247, 2004

Cutaneous manifestations of dermatomyositis commonly include Gottron’s papules, periorbital heliotrope rash, periungual erythema or telangiectasia, and poikiloderma. Vesicles or bullae have rarely been reported. We describe a patient with dermatomyositis who presented with vesicles and was subsequently diagnosed as having gastric carcinoma. It is important to recognize this vesiculo-bullous variant in order to avoid a delay in diagnosis. Vesiculo-bullous dermatomyositis may be associated with ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 22 : 248-253, 2004

We herein presented a 50-year-old female of myelodysplastic syndrome sub-typing refractory anemia with excess blasts. She had received conservative and immunosuppressive therapies, but not controlled well. One year later, multiple asymptomatic, erythematous papules, plaques and nodules developed over trunk and four limbs. The histopathological and immunohistochemical studies showed atypical mononuclear cells infiltrate positively stained with CD45 and myeloperoxidase in the whole dermis, indicat ..................More
