Abstract In Taiwan, local data about the atopic dermatitis (AD) prevalence have been insufficient. We survey the AD prevalence in schoolchildren and compare its difference between Kaohsiung and Penghu county in a cross-sectional point-prevalence study. Seven elementary schools in Kaohsiung county and four in Penghu county were selected and schoolchildren were examined by dermatologists in June 2004 and 2005, respectively. Totally 4,267 schoolchildren (2296 boys, 1971 girls) in Kaohs ..................More

Medium-dose UVA1 as a Monotherapy for Moderate to Severe Atopic Dermatitis — Primitive Results of a Monocenter Trial in Taiwan

Dermatol Sinica 24:102-109,2006

Long-wavelength ultraviolet A (340-400 nm: UVA1) phototherapy is known to be effective in the treatment of acute exacerbation of atopic dermatitis. However, little has been mentioned in the literature concerning the therapeutic efficacy and possible side effects of UVA1 phototherapy in Asian patients with atopic dermatitis. Medium-dose (50-100J/cm2) UVA1 phototherapy was used to treat 21 Chinese patients with acute moderate to severe atopic dermatitis for 15 times (5 times per week). ..................More

Multicentric Reticulohistiocytosis without Arthritis Successfully Treated with Systemic Corticosteroids- A Case Report and Literature Review
Shao-Min Hsu , Sheau-Chiou Chao , Julia Yu-Yun Lee
Dermatol Sinica 24:119-122,2006

Abstract A 46-year-old male presented with a 2-month history of multiple red papules on the cheeks and extremities without mucosal involvement or arthritis. There were only some lesions on the dorsal hands without periungual involvement. Biopsy of a skin lesion showed a dermal infiltrate consisting of mononuclear and multinucleated histiocytes with granular "ground glass"-like cytoplasm. These histiocytes were CD68-positive, and S-100 protein and CD30 negative in immunohistochemical s ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 24:123-130,2006

abstract Osteosarcoma is the most common primary malignant neoplasm of the bone. The mode of metastasis is mainly hematogenous. The most frequent metastatic sites of osteosarcoma are the lung, bones and kidneys. After a review of the literature, cutaneous metastasis of osteosarcoma is an extremely rare event with only few reported cases. Hereby we present a 38-year-old man with a primary osteoblastic osteosarcoma in the left mandible. He received radical surgery and regular follow up. ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 24:131-134,2006

ABSTRACT The clinical manifestations of calcinosis cutis vary from asymptomatic cutaneous papules to life-threatening calciphylaxis. We describe a 61-year-old female who was found to have extensive calcinosis cutis on her left forearm 4 days following liver transplantation. Large amount of calcium chloride solution was intravenously infused during the operation at the same site without gross extravasation. This uncommon complication may be attributed to local tissue hypercalcemia and ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 24:135-139,2006

Abstract Fibroblastic rheumatism is a relative rare syndrome characterized by polyarthralgia and joint stiffness associated with multiple cutaneous papules and nodules ranging from 2 to 20 mm in diameter. The skin nodules usually regress spontaneously, but there are often sequels of deformed joint. We described the occurrence of fibroblastic rheumatism in a female patient with systemic lupus erythematosus. Her skin nodules and arthralgia resolved after combination therapy of daily pr ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 24:145-149,2006

Venous hypertension is a significant problem for patients under chronic hemodialysis. Arterialization of the outflow venous system may induce this condition, and result in impairment of arteriovenous access function, disabling upper extremity edema, violaceous discoloration and hyperpigmentation, ulceration of the skin, and in advanced cases, gangrene formation of the fingers and neuralgia. Histologic features show thick-walled capillaries with plump endothelial cells in upper dermis, ..................More

Dermatol Sinica 24:157-158,2006

A 56-year-old man with diabetic mellitus presented with widespread annular erythematous patches on the buttocks, neck, and both legs. Several verrucous plaques and nodules were present within the annular patches (Fig. 1). Tinea corporis was diagnosed clinically because of the typical annular lesions. However, the plaques and nodules suggested a deeper fungal infection than usual, so an incisional biopsy of the largest nodule on the left thigh was performed. The specimen was sent for fu ..................More
