Xanthomas are skin tumors mostly resulting from abnormal metabolism of lipoprotein, either primary or secondary. Clinical recognition of xanthomas may bring to early detection of various diseases such as diabetes, pancreatitis, hypothyroidism, cholestatic liver diseases, renal impairment and life-threatening vascular atherosclerosis. The dermatologist is therefore in an ideal role to do a good job. Due to the different types of lipoprotein composition, the pathogenesis and disease pattern may be different. Therefore, the treatment modalities are variable. Once an appropiate treatment is given it may not only provide resolution of the xanthoma but also the accompanying diseases.
