Non-Clostridial Myositis
Ching-Hung Liu, Jau-Shiuh Chen, Chun-An Hsu
Dermatol Sinica 15: 169-172, 1997

Soft tissue infection is frequently misdiagnosed to be cellulitis in the early stage. We herein report a 58-year-old male patient with non-clostridial myositis, developing progressively extending painful lesions with gas accumulation over the buttocks and perineum. His disease was controlled only after extensive surgical excision. Soft tissue infection other than cellulitis composes of a heterogeneous group of diseases, sometimes with overlapping features. Fournier's gangrene occurs over the perineum and scrotum, but presents with few toxic signs, but occurs mainly over lower limbs in diabetics. Both diseases respond best to wide surgical excision under antibiotic use. A delay in diagnosis or treatment may result in high morbidity and mortality rate.
