Dermatol Sinica 15: 173-176, 1997

Pemphigus refers to a group of autoimmune blistering diseases of the skin and mucous membranes. Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a serious multisystem autoimmune disorder which frequently the skin and joints, and is characterized by high anti-nuclear antihbody (ANA) titres. Although both conditions are generally believed to be part of the autoimmune spectrum, each has distinctive clinical, histologic and immunopathologic characteristics. We describe herein, a 41-year-old female. Histology revealed typical features of pemphigus vulgaris (PV) with characeristic suprabasal clefting and acantholytic cells. Immunofluorescent studies showed intense staining of the intercellular region of the epid-ermis with IgG and C3, confirming our diagnosis of PV.
