In the treatment of plaque psoriasis, tazarotene was known to be effective, but its efficacy in a Taiwanese population has not been reported. Our purpose was to compare the efficacy, side effects and the duration of therapeutic effects of a once-daily tazarotene 0.1% gel plus petrolatum with the standard twice daily calcipotriol 0.005% ointment in the treatment of patients with plaque psoriasis. A total of 23 Taiwanese patients(21 male and 2 female) with 50 pairs of psoriatic lesions were recruited from March 2002 to October 2002. The patients were aged from 12 to 80 years with a mean age 60.2±7.3. The study consisted of a session of 12-week treatment and an interval of observation for 4 weeks after treatment. At the end of the treatment(week 12), tazarotene-petrolatum was as effective as calcipotriol in the reduction of scaling, plaque elevation, erythema and overall severity. However, tazarotene-petrolatum demonstrated a better maintenance effect than calcipotriol after cessation of therapy at week 16.
